Do You Have a Regular Diet?

I was recently reading a piece on Slate about the challenges of eating set meals at regular times and it got me thinking: Who has time for breakfast, lunch or dinner anymore?

The writer, Ellen Tarlin, describes how her parents stressed a regular eating schedule when she was little: Breakfast before going to school, lunch around noontime at school and family dinner always at 6 or 6:30 p.m. As a teen, though, her schedule deteriorated -skipped breakfasts, late lunches, regular snacking, no dinner. That lack of schedule persisted into adulthood. In fact, this was her typical eating pattern:

"Before starting this project, I ate breakfast: sometimes at 11 a.m. , sometimes at 3 p.m. or anywhere in between. I never ate it at home during the week, never sat at a table, and always did other things while I ate. I still eat lunch at my desk at work, if at all As for dinner, my evenings after work are brief. If I spend a full day in the office, I get home at around 7:30, walk and feed the dog, make dinner (though I've got a prep-time crankiness threshold about 20-30 minutes), eat it..."

She's not alone. We've written before about how many busy workers resort to eating lunch at their desks, or skip lunch altogether, chomping on an energy bar as a conference call a pick-me-up. Some 44 percent of Americans still don't eat breakfast according to a 2009 survey by the International Food Information Council Foundation. And while many parents aim for family dinners with their kids, late hours at the office often make regular sit-down dinners a far-fetched dream during the week. As a result, many of our meals are all over the place and, at least for me, regular snacking throughout the day often substitutes for the traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner. I work from home, so it's a little too tempting to snack, with the kitchen so close to my office.

Tarlin, though, is setting out change her eating patterns and lays out several rules for more mindful eating. Among them: I must eat breakfast before leaving the house in the morning. I must take a lunch break, use it to eat lunch, and eat away from my desk. I can have snacks, but no more all-day grazing at my desk. I must chew slowly and thoroughly. I must sit upright when eating. There will be no multitasking while I eat: no TV,no iPod, no computer, no reading.

Tarlin has no children, which, she says, is a mixed bag when attempting to regulate her eating schedule. With no kids to mind, she has some semblance of control over her schedule and mealtimes aren't "stressful affairs full of negotiations, whining, or tears." But, on the downside, she's not forced to act as a role model, either. "If I skip dinner, there's no hungry child to make me feel guilty. If I feel like having cold pizza and chocolate cake for breakfast, I can," she writes.

Readers, do you eat three regular meals a day at set times, or do you find yourself skipping meals, eating at irregular times or grazing on snacks? How does having children affect your meal schedules?
